Episode Three
Sparrow Meditation

Warning This Section Does Contain Spoilers

While listening to the Sparrow meditation we hear a tapping sound. All the taps are the same length so it can't be Morse code that requires some taps to be short and some long for the dots and dashes. This is a cypher called a tap cope. It is mostly used by prisoners, especially in Vietnam, to communicate by tapping on pipes or walls. It uses a polybius square to solve.

The first tap is the row number and the second tap is the column number to give us coordinates for the letter. So to tap out a letter B we would tap, pause, tap, tap. To tap out a letter E we would tap, pause, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap.

Our recording has the following message:

tap, tap, pause, tap, tap, tap = H

tap, pause, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap = E

tap, tap, tap, pause, tap = L

tap, tap, tap, pause, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap = P

tap, tap, tap, pause, tap, tap = M

tap, pause, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap = E
